TCM Winter Wisdom: Time for rest and renewal


In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Winter corresponds to the Water element. This is directly linked to the body's Kidney and Bladder systems.


Winter is the time of ultimate Yin. Nature is quiet. Energy is stored.

The TCM principle for winter health is 'Nourishing and Storing’ . This means we need to slow down and protect our deepest resources. (In TCM, the Kidney energy governs longevity and vitality).


Four easy and practical ways to care for yourself this Winter


Go to Bed Early, Wake Up Late 

Your routine should harmonise with the shortened daylight hours to give winter rest

​It’s ok to go to bed earlier than usual.  

If possible, rising after sunrise will minimise exposure to the cold and dark. 

This simple change helps conserve your Yang energy (the body's warming, active force).


Eat warming foods

These help protect your internal fire (Yang Qi) from the cold.


​Focus on stews, soups, root vegetables, and cooking methods that involve simmering and slow cooking. Add warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.


Strategic Warming and Protection 

According to TCM, "Cold enters from the feet." 

Keeping key areas warm is crucial for blocking external cold from penetrating the body's energy channels. Wear your fluffy socks, keep your lower back (Kidney area) and neck covered.


A hot foot soak encourages circulation, warms the body and calms the mind for better sleep.


Cultivate stillness


The emotion TCM associates with the Kidneys is fear. Sometimes Winter can bring feelings of isolation or quiet anxiety.


Use Winter as a time for reading, reflection and quiet introspection.

Stop the scrolling!  Opt for a read which makes you happy.

Allow your spirit to rest, just as nature is resting.


If you are feeling isolated, send a message to a friend - or let your Acupuncturist know. Wrap up, go for a walk and smile at those who pass you. There are plenty of good people around you, despite the bad news we read and see on a daily basis.
