ACUPUNCTURE
FAQ's
WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture is a medicine system originating in China over 2000 years ago and uses fine needles inserted at specific points on the body. The theory behind Traditional Acupuncture is that it restores the free flow of energy (known as Qi) around the meridians of the body, to promote the body's own healing response and restore physical, mental and emotional balance.
Western Medical understanding is that the insertion of fine needles stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle and cause neurochemical messenger molecules to be released. The biochemical changes that result from this influence the body’s homeostatic mechanisms to promote physical and emotional wellbeing.
More detailed information about the modern scientific understanding of acupuncture is available in the "Miscellaneous" section of the FAQ page of the British Acupuncture Council website.

IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?
Yes, but check the credentials of an Acupuncturist and how many hours of training they have undertaken before booking. When you visit Koru Acupuncture, you are being treated by a member of the British Acupuncture Council who has completed the mandatory 3 years / 3600+ hours of acupuncture training under continuous assessment and adheres to a strict Code of Practice.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ACUPUNCTURE?
It can be used alongside Western Medicine and other therapies in the majority of cases. It is strongly advised to raise any health concerns with your GP.
Whilst many people turn to acupuncture to help with a specific condition, others just use it to help restore feelings of balance and wellbeing. It can also be used preventatively as part of your healthcare routine.

Acupuncture is currently included in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence [NICE] guidelines for migraine/tension headaches and chronic pain:

More information about specific conditions can be found on the British Acupuncture Council's website, where evidence Factsheets are available.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? HOW SHOULD I PREPARE?
Since acupuncture involves needle insertion, occasionally this can leave a very small bruise.
To safeguard against unwanted side-effects, you must advise of any medication you are taking. Please always mention if you are feeling too hot, are feeling hungry or thirsty, or need to use the bathroom.

Your modesty and comfort is top priority, but wearing loose comfortable layers will minimise the need to remove clothing.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON MY FIRST SESSION?
Initial appointments are around 90 minutes and follow-up treatments are 50 minutes.
Your medical history will be taken and we will discuss the reason for your visit.
Your individual treatment plan will be based on your state of health and lifestyle. The combination of points used will be right for your whole body, as well as your symptoms. It may not just be needles that are used!
Dependent on your needs, massage, cupping, Gua Sha and Earseeds may also be incorporated.
Acupuncture needles are so fine that most people don’t feel them being inserted. You may feel a mild tingle as they are adjusted. Many people feel deeply relaxed during the treatment.
In fact, it is the ultimate compliment if you fall asleep!
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
This depends on the scenario. For recurring conditions, a course generally consists of 6-8 treatments. However, effects may be noticed after just a couple of sessions.

We will always discuss the expected number of treatments and review this together, dependent on your progress.
I take pride in my work and want to do the best job for you, so I will always work hard to help you get a resolution as soon as I can.

Where a condition is chronic, you may wish to consider occasional "maintenance" sessions after the initial course has finished. My aim is always to get you to that phase as soon as possible.
